Mmmm… The cast has an “it’s a Sony!” time in this episode. In other news, Nagi becomes a Zashiki-Warashi…

I recently heard that the events in this episode did not occur in the manga, though that’s the case, I thought the episode was wonderful. I like the concept of the episode; a contained, suspenseful short-story with an anticlimax. The episode really had me there when what Jin did the previous day remained unclear to the viewers, I thought for a moment there that Jin did something sexually provocative, causing Nagi to be upset. Fortunately Jin did something rather trivial instead, thus annoying Nagi. Looking back at the episode, it is no wonder that Jin was anticipating Akiba’s arrival quite badly. However, the downside of the episode was that Nagi didn’t get much screentime, viewers would only be able to hear her

Suspense was present, coupled up with the maintained level of comedy. It was also refreshing, as this episode was unusual in a good way; the entire episode takes place in Jin’s house and had a concrete plot, suspense and bedazzlement was established through various scenes, especially the initial scene where Jin stares at a bottle. In short, the episode was uniquely good, especially due to the pairing of comedy with suspense.

I thought the concluding scene where Jin apologises was touching, it was absolutely a pity that Nagi wasn’t behind the closet to hear it. Jin froze totally when Nagi stepped into the room, he was probably thinking how silly it would’ve been to repeat what he said to the closet.

Director Yamakan did a fantastic job in storyboarding and producing this particular episode, should quality episodes like these be easily produced, Kannagi could easily expand into a multi-season anime. Considering how the manga hasn’t ended, it is fairly clear that more filler episodes like this would be needed should the anime’s ending be planned to correspond to that of the manga.
