Winter 2009 Anime; My Picks
Information from METANORN
Looks like most of the shows are sequels, of which prequels I have not watched, so I’ll give those a skip. Most of the rest just seem pretty weird, like Asakiyumemishi The Tale of Genji.
Hence, those which I will probably be watching…
Maria+Holic
Producer: SHAFT
A sophomore named Kanako enrolls in an all-girls school due to her phobia of men. Expecting that she would finally found the yuri-love-of-her-life, Kanako meets Maria, which happens to be the most popular and beautiful girl in school. Her ideal girl was ruined because Maria turns out to be a sadistic trap.
I like the concept of a Yuri girl falling in love with a trap who may just kill her. Considering this as a SHAFT production, we have much to expect from this show.
Akikan!
Producer: Brains Base
Daichi Kakeru was just buying soda from a vending machine but the melon juice soda that came out magically transforms into a girl whom he nicknamed ‘Melon’. Other several Akikan (’Empty Can”) girls appears, which needed a kiss in order to infuse Carbon Dioxide in their bodies.
This seems to be another My Girlfriend of unknown origins fell from the Sky anime, it is fairly obvious that we’ll be expecting some injected comedy, hopefully it’s good. Haven’t really heard of the producer Brains Base though, so I did slight research on it, apparently they were the “in-between animators” for Ouran High School Host Club, hmm…
Asu no Yoichi
A boy swordsman, Yoichi and his father stays in mountain training for his descent from the mountain. Yoichi comes to the city to lodge and stay with 4 beautiful sisters. A new more severe “training” regiment awaits him.
Mmm, good stuff, a romantic comedy, likely a harem anime as well, interesting enough for me, there’s even a charismatic main character. I might start reading the manga before it airs.
Axis Powers Hentalia
Producer: Studio Deen
Hetalia (”useless” + “Italy”) is the story of the countries of the world made into people, carrying with them that nation’s stereotypes. The main setting is the WWI/WWII era, but other scenes from history (such as the American Revolution) are sometimes depicted.
Axis Powers Hentalia? What evil could this bring? Hopefully none. It has nonetheless a pretty interesting concept, each character is attributed to a specific country in the WWI/II era.
The Seiyuus:
Daisuke Namikawa as Italy, Hiroki Takahashi as Japan, Hiroki Yasumoto as Germany, Katsuyuki Konishi as America, Masaya Onosaka as France, Noriaki Sugiyama as United Kingdom, Yasuhiro Takato as Russia, Akira Sasanuma as Austria, Ken Takeuchi as Lithuania, Michiko Neya as Hungary, Rie Kugimiya as Liechtenstein, Romi Paku as Switzerland
ohohoh, wait right there, did I just see Rie Kugimiya as Liechtenstein. Let me guess, a tsundere female intent on world domination? Meh, a must watch in my opinion.
Kiss x Sis OVA
Producer: Feel
Keita has two step-sisters who love him in a lustful way and have no problems expressing it, they even are in competition about that. When one day they confess their feelings for him in front of everyone, Keita rejected them, but he felt sorry after so he says that he’ll study hard in order to get in the same highschool as them.
I feel for the sisters yet at the same time sympathise with Keita, pun probably intended. A one episode OVA, I’ll be watching this.
Yes! Precure 5
Producer: Toei
I’m so watching this, NOT. I watched the original Pretty Cure on television and what I saw and heard each episode was something along the lines of “Oh, bestow us with the power of light, yadayadayadayada, PRETTY CURE SUPER TWIST!” I’m not really sure if I would survive reliving that experience, in any case it seems that the show is already airing in Japan and will end February next year. What baffles me however, is how popular the show is with its Japanese audience.
~~~~~
These are probably the anime I’ll be watching during the winter season, it has some pretty interesting stories to offer, like Axis Powers Hentalia. Hopefully there’ll be a couple more harem or romantic comedy anime for the upcoming winter season. *twists fingers*
“Considering this as a SHAFT production, we have much to expect from this show.”
Much crap to expect, you mean ? Much censorship ? Much dumb and pointless scribbles on the chalkboard ? Honestly, SHAFT fanboys…
“Haven’t really heard of the producer Brains Base though”
Emm…Baccano ? As in, absolute best show of last summer design and storywise, with incredible production values ?
I was reading in your about page that you enjoyed slice-of-life and comedy anime. Since you’ve never heard of Brain’s Base you really need to check out their work: Kamichu, Kurenai, and Natsume Yuujin Chou. Still need to get to Baccano myself.
I’m really, really happy that we’re getting more Natsume in the winter.
@Karry: I am not a SHAFT fanboy, I merely admire how well they did Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei and Honey and Clover, you are free to express how silly they are in your opinion but frankly speaking I think they are good. Honestly, if I were a fan of any producers, it would definitely not be SHAFT. And if you are looking for a SHAFT fanboy, this way please.
And perhaps I was wrong to say “Haven’t really heard” though it is pretty much true of the situation. Contrary to that, I have watched Baccano and even read its light novels, it was a decent, fine and I would say great anime but I wouldn’t speak of it as grand as you did.
I love how SHAFT do their work on anime currently. It’s just creative and artistic. About what I would be watching, I’ll definitely watch APH, Maria Holic and Zoku Natsume. I’ll also give White Album and Kurokami a try.
