Toaru Majutsu no Index 09
Frankly speaking, I don’t like being greeted by a short wikipedia entry enhanced with pseudo-inspirational emotions at the start of every episode. Toaru Majutsu no Index pisses me off with its methods of plot development and Kamijou Touma.
Aisa Himegami’s past is vaguely explained in an overly sentimental scene which simply wasn’t effective and seemed too fake to be true…

Uhuh, is this scene trying to tell the audience how Himegami feels towards killing? Definitely there are better alternatives to doing that other than having a short cheesy flashback before she dies? Hey, viewers haven’t even seen much of her character yet and she gets a scene which attempts to be emotional? There needs to be a buildup before things get emotional, we don’t even know much about her and… I realised Himegami’s voice actor does Kotomi’s(CLANNAD) voice as well. It is no wonder I was reminded of Kotomi when Himegami spoke.
What made Kamijou so worked up over the Alchemist’s plan? He isn’t particularly delighted about any villain’s plans, except what he thinks is right. He resorts to frowning and spouting lines of faux bravery when in disapproval of a villain’s operations. The unnecessary nature and melodramatism of Kamijou ticks me off.
Despite melodramatism and extreme facial response used to explain the Alchemist’s relationship with Index, things get better in the second half of the episode, when the real fight starts. Gruesome and gory stuff occured, Kamijou had his arm severed and Stiyl was skinned, literally. The conclusion was pretty awesome as Kamijou pulls off a convincing act by turning hysterical, thus intimidating the Alchemist and ruining his spell.
I was entirely baffled as to how the story was going to resume smoothly when Kamijou’s arm was severed. Fortunately a deus ex machina occured, he reattached his arm through advanced surgical treatment.
The melodramatism of Toaru Majutsu no Index has caught my attention, in a negative manner. Nevertheless, I’ll still be watching it for the occasional good scenes and new characters; like Accelerator who would appear in the next episode.

I’m anti-Kamijyou too and I made it my point to troll forums and blogs to denounce him(and the show). For my reasons I say that the illogical actions by the characters, much too complex skills which were only flashy though looking like it was based on solid thinking. The animators’ decision of not bothering to explain anything breeds discrepancies across the show. Coupled with your apt description of the main character’s one-tracked mind. I am only watching this for the girls and the show’s overall incoherent-ness.
