Clannad: After Story 19

clannadafterstoryepisode19

I’m rather disappointed for the fact that I haven’t cried since Kotomi and Yukine’s individual arcs in season 1 and 2. The string of emotional scenes did send me on the verge of crying, but was perpetually insufficient to generate tears despite being potent. I’m just missing out too much on the Clannad emotional baggage. Now that pressing issues were resolved, humor is likely to ensue to offset the drama spawned by the previous episodes in the following ones.

Fuko’s reappearance was an indication of such a change, it has been a 20 odd episodes since we last saw her and such a comeback was most certainly a pleasant surprise. I’m eager to see what more Clannad has to offer.

I have been using a lot of tissues the past few weeks, not because Clannad was a tearjerker, but because I had recovered from and contracted the common cold five times consecutively.

I initially wanted to hold off Clannad till Saturday since this is a test week, however, the urge of wanting to know how they disposed Nagisa Tomoya copes with Nagisa’s death overcame me. Hence I have finally caught up with Clannad!

All's Well That Ends Bad

All's Well That Ends Bad, Ushio's violent

I wasn’t really affected by the episode, because I was partially spoiled by the movie’s trailer. Anyway screw it, Nagisa died in this episode while giving birth and I subconsciously knew about it. I never expected that the story would be focused on Tomoya getting over depression after Ushio was born. The movie trailer led me to believe that Nagisa’s death came years after Ushio was born. It looks like the following episodes will display Tomoya’s angst and how he copes with Nagisa’s death.

Minori radar detects upcoming inflation of tissue prices!

Minori radar detects upcoming inflation of tissue prices!

I’ve known of a certain unfortunate ending when I first watched the Clannad movie’s trailer. The gradual transition to more seriousness foreshadows a bad future. It would only lead me to wonder what happens next. Fans have speculated that the anime would be following a severely gloomy route from the visual novel, possibly making it similar to the movie, that probably implies serious business from Clannad now on. However I seriously doubt the possibility of the happiness turning downhill completely from the next episode although it will be a tearjerker as Ushio is bound to be delivered, as implied by the OP and ED.

These two episodes have given off a certain amount of emotional vibes which definitely will lead to something depressing, I just hope Nagisa gets well soon. Thinking back, I regret watching episode 14 only when 15 was released, I’m getting too engrossed in the story, the same thing happens when I binge through an entire series in a day. (Argh)

No you do not mess with a drunk Nagisa... Oh no you don't....

No you do not mess with a drunk Nagisa... Oh no you don't...

I thought the episode was well-executed, especially Nagisa’s graduation, I had never thought about the possibility of Nagisa never meeting Tomoya until the second half of the episode. That certainly struck me as Nagisa was unproductive in a societal standpoint. She has indeed come a long way from the “bottom of the hill” with the help from Tomoya, it’s indeed a heartwarming fact that Tomoya had made a big change in Nagisa’s life.

What comes next would probably be focus on Nagisa and Tomoya’s marriage, and a steamy scene depicting how Tomoya causes Nagisa to conceive, clearly. Errhm, whatever would be thrown at the viewers, will definitely be interesting, and emotional. Perhaps the plot will take time to elaborate on the other characters’ future.

What didn’t seem appealing in the episode were the baseball matches with Akio, it was compacted into a small timeframe hence it seemed rather awkward as the baseball match was a huge matter, but there was definitely insufficient time to justify it as a big issue for Tomoya, hence imagination on the viewer’s accord would probably be needed…

I was initially puzzled at Tomoya’s reluctance to speak about his father, changing the subject to swimsuits when Nagisa speaks to him was simply extreme. The first season did not make his father seem all that detestable. The couple’s visit to the prison justifies Tomoya’s reactions in my opinion. The father did prevent Tomoya from advancing his career by participating in illicit activities, despite knowing that, all he has is a face staring into nothingness devoid of expression?

Yuusuke’s past serves as an uncanny archetype of Tomoya’s current situation. Tomoya’s career advancement came to a stop when Mr Okazaki committed a crime, I would take that to be loli rape. Tomoya seems to be worked up over the issue and lost focus on his main objective, which was to make Nagisa happy. I hope he puts the situation off his mind and just resume working at his original workplace, willingly. The severity of matters for Tomoya will probably be reduced when Sanae acts as the middleman for the father and son in the next episode. Hopefully things get better between the two after that.

Clannad: After Story 11

The last few episodes have been very much enjoyable as they were more character driven, focus was given to Tomoya and Nagisa’s relationship.

Work causes Tomoya to spend less time with Nagisa, he misses a date with Nagisa at the Founder’s Festival of the school as he returned to work to rectify an error he made. He insists on doing so despite Yoshino telling him not to miss out on the time with Nagisa. Oddly, Nagisa was fine with it when Tomoya showed up at the end of the day. It seems that the two’s relationship is heading towards something positive despite the difficulties and obstacles they face.

Problems arise soon after the Tomoya faces his new life, he works for the Furukawas but soon leaves for a new house and job to relieve their burden. He gets fairly excited over this but returns back home entirely drained after a day of work. Nagisa gets well enough to school, but the drama club disbands due to the lack of members, Nagisa speaks less about school to Tomoya too.

Surely Tomoya would settle into his new lifestyle soon, his enthusiasm over his job reminds me of excitement over changes which wear off swiftly. I do wish for Nagisa’s situation at school to improve, but there doesn’t seem to be any solution to revive the club. I would like to see where Sunohara had goofed off to, but the story seems much too focused on Tomoya currently.

Jin attempts to be Nagisa, perhaps he’ll be spotted hugging Dango plushies in the next episode of Kannagi?
